The G-4 nations warned on Thursday that the longer the reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is stalled, the greater the representation deficit will be. These nations said that increasing the number of UNAC members would enable the body to effectively contain existing conflicts. G-4 countries include India, Brazil, Germany and Japan.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj said that the issue of equal representation in the Security Council was included in the agenda of the General Assembly forty years ago in 1979. It is regrettable that even after four decades no concrete steps have been taken on this issue. He stressed that it is high time for the Security Council to act in line with its charter responsibility.

Permanent Representative Kamboj further said that without increasing the membership of the UNSC, its goals would not be achieved. The same Council will be able to effectively manage today’s conflicts around the world as well as the increasingly complex and interconnected global challenges.
