The controversy is not taking its name after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi commented on Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hit back on Friday, saying that even Mahatma Gandhi used to write such letters.
Addressing a rally in Bhavnagar, the BJP leader criticized the Congress MP, saying he was fond of insulting national heroes except the Gandhi-Nehru family.
Rahul Gandhi, during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, had cited a document alleging that Savarkar had helped the British and had written mercy petitions.
Addressing a BJP campaign rally in Gujarat, he said, whatever Rahul Gandhi said was childish. The kind of letters he is showing… I want to tell him that even Mahatma Gandhi had written such letters. People have even published them. He always insults our respected national personalities except Gandhi-Nehru family.
The BJP leader further said, he does not believe in Savarkar or Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose or Sardar Patel. Instead he always tries to defame them.
During a press conference in Maharashtra’s Akola on Thursday, Gandhi showed media persons a paper which it claimed was a letter written by Savarkar to the British. During this, the former Congress President told the media, I will read the last line, which says – I beg to remain your most obedient servant and signed by VD Savarkar.
Union minister Anurag Thakur is also in Surat to campaign for BJP candidates. He also criticized Rahul Gandhi’s statement and said that the opposition party and its leaders will never be able to see beyond one family.
