The European Parliament (EU) declared Russia a ‘state sponsor of terrorism’. This news is coming out citing the reports of international media. The EU argued that Moscow’s military strikes violated international law on civilian targets such as energy infrastructure, hospitals, schools and shelters. It termed the attacks on Ukraine as a cruel and inhuman act.

Members of the European Parliament said Russia has deliberately carried out attacks and atrocities against the civilian population of Ukraine. The members said that Moscow has committed acts of destruction of civilian infrastructure, serious violations of human rights and war crimes against international humanitarian law, which amounts to an act of terrorism.

During the monthly plenary session in Strasbourg (France) on Wednesday afternoon, 494 votes were cast in favor of the resolution. While 58 members voted against this proposal.

On the other hand, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed this decision by tweeting. He wrote in his tweet- I welcome the European Parliament’s decision to declare Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. Russia must be isolated at all levels and held accountable for terrorism in Ukraine and around the world.

However, the resolutions of the European Parliament are not legally binding. The media of the European Union (EU) are widely used in political circles to promote specific political positions. According to experts, this move by the European Parliament is largely symbolic, as the EU does not have any legal framework to support it. Western countries have already imposed tough sanctions on Russia. Ukrainian President Zelensky also urged the US and other countries to declare Russia a state sponsor of terrorism.
