The grandson of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on Thursday filed a case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly insulting Savarkar. Ranjit Savarkar, grandson of the late freedom fighter, in his complaint lodged at the Shivaji Park police station, also demanded that Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole should also be booked for making a similar statement. A police officer said that no first information report has been filed so far.

Ranjit Savarkar, grandson of Veer Savarkar said, I am here in Maharashtra to file a complaint against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for insulting Veer Savarkar in a public meeting. Rahul Gandhi had said that Veer Savarkar took pension and worked for the British and he also worked against the country.

Rahul accuses Savarkar of taking pension and giving mercy petition to British
Rahul Gandhi continued to target Savarkar during his Bharat Jodo Yatra on Thursday, accusing him of helping the British and writing mercy petitions out of fear. At a press conference in Wadegaon in Maharashtra’s Akola district, Rahul Gandhi showed documents from government records from 1920, which he claimed contained a letter written by Savarkar to the British. A police officer said that no FIR has been registered. We are probing further.

Ashish Shelar quotes Indira Gandhi’s comment on Savarkar
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashish Shelar on Thursday cited former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s praise of V D Savarkar while criticizing Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about the Hindutva ideologue. Talking to reporters in Mumbai, Shelar said that Rahul Gandhi has made a mindless comment about Veer Savarkar and we condemn it. We wonder why Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray took such a soft stand on this issue and destroyed his own credibility.

The BJP leader also claimed that Rahul’s grandmother, late Indira Gandhi respected Savarkar. Shelar said, I can show you a letter from the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in which Savarkar was described as a remarkable son of India, asking her secretary to plan Savarkar’s birth centenary celebrations. Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction is an ally of the Congress in Maharashtra. Thackeray, however, distanced himself from Rahul Gandhi’s comments on Savarkar.
