Lt Gen Munir is considered an outstanding officer in Pakistan. Lt Gen Munir entered military service through the Officers Training School program at Mangla and was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment. He has been a close aide of Gen Bajwa ever since he took charge of troops in the Force Command Northern Areas as a brigadier under the outgoing Army Chief, who was then Commander X Corps. Lt Gen Munir was subsequently appointed Director General Military Intelligence in early 2017, and was made the Inter-Services Intelligence chief in October the following year. However, his tenure as the top intelligence officer turned out to be the shortest ever, as he was replaced within eight months at the insistence of the then PM Imran Khan. He was posted as the Gujranwala Corps Commander, a post he held for two years, before being transferred to the General Headquarters as Quarter Master General.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister warned opposition leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan that the coalition government would deal with him after the process of appointing the new army chief was completed.
