Israel has confirmed that the US Justice Department has opened an investigation into the death of Al Jazeera journalist Shirin Abu Akleh. Israel termed the decision as a ‘big mistake’. Israel also said that it would not cooperate in any way in this US investigation.
Akleh was a well-known American-born Palestinian journalist. She was killed during an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) raid in the West Bank city of Jenin in May this year. Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said the US Justice Department’s decision to investigate the tragic death of Shirin Abu Akleh is a big mistake.
The IDF conducted a professional, independent investigation, the full details of which were shared with US authorities. He said, I have sent a message to the American representatives that we stand with the soldiers of the IDF. We will not cooperate with any external investigation. We will not allow anyone to interfere in Israel’s internal affairs.
