Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has declined the National Students Union of India’s (NSUI) invitation to attend a campaign event in Gujarat, saying his name does not figure in the party’s list of star campaigners. Sources gave this information on Wednesday. The Congress on Tuesday released its list of 40 star campaigners for the first phase of the Gujarat Assembly polls, which includes party president Mallikarjun Kharge, former president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and several other senior leaders. Tharoor’s name does not figure in it.

Asked if he was disappointed at not being included in the list of star campaigners, Tharoor said, “The Congress knows who and what is best for it.” In such a situation, there is no point in being disappointed. Sources said that NSUI had invited Tharoor for one of its programs in Gujarat, but Tharoor declined the invitation saying that his name did not figure in the list of star campaigners.
Tharoor had lost to Khajge in the party’s presidential election last month and polled around 1,000 votes out of over 9,000 votes polled. The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) had invited Tharoor for the event in Gujarat, but sources close to him said he had to decline because his name did not figure in the list of star campaigners.
In the past, Tharoor has campaigned for the party in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai; Whereas in Kerala assembly elections in 2011, 2016 and 2021; Campaigned in local elections in Kerala in 2010, 2015 and 2020.
